Rockies Roadtrip: Day 2 Jasper

Day 2 was spent in Jasper. Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate and it was cloudy and rainy.

We went to Mount Robson, which is the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies, but we could not see much as it was obscured by clouds.

Stop #1: Medicine Lake

Located in Maligne Valley, Medicine Lake is formed by the Maligne river.

Stop #2: Maligne Lake (Highlight)

Maligne Lake is the largest natural lake in the Canadian Rockies. Ringed by snow-and-ice-capped mountains, the 22 km long lake stretches past serene Spirit Island right to the melt-water channels of Coronet Glacier.

Stop #3: Maligne Canyon (Highlight)
Maligne Canyon is the deepest canyon in Jasper National Park, with a depth of more than 50 metres at particular points. Hikers of all abilities can discover this incredible natural landmark by crossing six bridges built across various points of the canyon. For those looking for a gentle hike, head over the First and Second bridges. The Second Bridge is the highest point of the canyon, standing more than 50 metres above the water. Going further will bring you to the Third Bridge, which is the best location to see a spectacular waterfall and makes for great photos.

Stop #4: Pyramid Island (Highlight)
Drive further down from the Pyramid Lake parking lot to explore Pyramid Island. Pyramid Island is a short 1.5 km (1 mile) further down Pyramid Lake Road, connected to the lake by the wooden bridge.

Stop #5: Annette Lake (Highlight)
Lake Annette & Lake Edith, known as kettle lakes, are the residuals of the lake that covered the entire Athabasca valley during the end of ice age. Despite the cloudy and rainy weather, the color was turquoise, and I can only imagine how beautiful and sparkling it typically is in sunny weather.

That’s a wrap for an eventful day in Jasper National Park. Fingers crossed for much better weather and clearer views!

Note: We had lunch at Bear’s Paw Bakery which offers yummy baked goods, beverages and hot soup. We had dinner at Famoso Neopolitan Pizzeria which offers affordable pasta and pizza options.
