Distance: Approximately 6.5km (city portion)

Difficulty Level: Easy with some gradual uphill climbs, moderate traffic

Estimated Cycling Time: 1-2 hours

Start Points: Park & Tilford Gardens (abundant parking lots) or Ambleside Park

It was a beautiful Spring day and definitely time to explore the waterfront-oriented Spirit Trail on bikes. Currently, it is a greenway that extends across the North Shore. Ultimately, the Spirit Trail will span from Horseshoe Bay to Deep Cove.

Currently, the main section of the Spirit Trail extends from Ambleside Park to Park & Tilford Gardens. The majority of the trail is separated from traffic. This is a very family-friendly and accessible trail, and a lot of the cyclists travelled in families or groups. Along the trail, we also spotted runners, walkers. The entire route was really well-marked, with abundant directions and signs so you won’t get lost easily! In particular, do observe the circular designs on the ground with red dotted lines and the official Spirit Trail logo.

Personally, I find that the trail would make a great family-friendly morning or afternoon out as it is both scenic and educational - enblematic of history and culture. There are lots of great picture of break spots along the way!

Featured Highlights:

Ambleside Park: Follow the trail through the centre of the park, then around behind Park Royal Mall.

Welch Street path and Welch Park: After crossing the bridge over the Capilano River, the Spirit Trail continues on a wide path next to Welch Street. It travels across Squamish Nation land, then through tree-lined Welch Park.

Harbourside Overpass (pictured left): Climb up the curving ramps of the Harbourside Overpass. Pause at the top for a breather on the fun curved benches.

Mosquito Creek Marina: Next comes one of the most interesting parts: the trail actually dips down below sea level to pass under a boat lift. Pause at the bottom to look through the porthole into the ocean!

Squamish Nation Waterfront Greenway: The next section travels through Squamish Nation land past some float homes. Look for Squamish art on the seating areas and Squamish artist Wade Baker’s beautiful steel and carved red cedar arch called “Gateway to Ancient Wisdom”.

Lonsdale Quay: Head into the bustling and social Lonsdale Quay for a break, or just to admire the beautiful skyline.

The Shipyards: Past the Quay, explore the newly redeveloped Shipyards neighbourhood. There were many people out for a stroll or lounge along the pier for picturesque views.
