Tip: Book the bus ride and be at the bus station early. Check the departure times from the bus station in Siena back to Florence early as well.
Siena’s twisting historic centre, a Unesco World Heritage Site, is a unique strolling ground in Tuscany, Italy. Magnificent buildings like the Palazzo Communal and the cathedral with its specially sloping square are eye-catching. Nearly all of Siena’s postcard-worthy attractions are walk-able.
Stop #1: Piazza del Campo
Also known as The Campo, this is Siena’s charming medieval square. With its unique shell shape and architectural integrity, its considered one of Europe’s greatest medieval squares and has become the symbol of this Tuscan city. It is still the center of the city’s public and civic life. From the piazza, 11 narrow streets lead into the city.
The space that would become the current square was originally a reclaimed land that allowed the outflow of rainwater. The core of the emerging city was higher up, in the area of Castelvecchio, and the future ‘Campo’ was a space for markets. The history of the square is intertwined with the construction of the Palazzo Comunale, which overlooks it.
interestingly, the Torre del Mangia is one of the most famous towers in Tuscany.
Stop #2: Piazza del Duomo
Piazza del Duomo is one of Italy’s best gothic structures, with its white, green and red marble exterior facade. The interior is equally amazing in a different way - with inlaid marble floor, decorated with 56 detailed panels executed between the 14th to 16th centuries.
