Yoho lies on the western slopes of the Canadian Rocky Mountains. The name “Yoho” is from the Cree language and fittingly means awe. Vertical rock walls, waterfalls and dizzying peaks draw visitors from around the world. With exceptional hiking and sightseeing, the park offers a unique glimpse of Canada’s natural wonders. Although it is less popular and smaller than Banff and Jasper National Parks, the park has stunning attractions and a more intimate vibe.
Stop #1: Takkakaw Falls (Highlight)
One of Canada’s highest free falling waterfalls, Takakkaw Falls is Canada’s second highest (not largest) waterfall. Walk up to the red chairs and close to the waterfall for soaring vista views.
Stop #2: The Siding Cafe (Highlight)
The friendly laidback Siding Cafe in Field was the perfect spot to get nourished and re-fueled. You can order the food at the door, and there are some picnic tables nearby to enjoy the area and food. I appreciated that there were healthier options beyond the usual Western fare. We enjoyed the nourishing Vegetarian Rice bowl and Curry bowl. They have half and full portions.
Stop #3: Emerald Lake (Highlight)
Emerald Lake is a spectacular and serene turquoise glacial lake in Yoho National Park surrounded by mountains. It is so picturesque and tranquil.
Walk along the 5km Emerald Lake loop to view various perspectives of the lake. When the sun was shining upon it, the lake really resembles the beautiful deep green of emeralds. Emerald Lake is less touristy and crowded, with a peaceful atmosphere.
You can opt to canoe for an hour for $70 (up to 3 people).
Stop #4: Wapta Falls (Highlight)
Don't make the mistake we did and get Google directions to "Wapta Falls" - it led us down a long pot-hole-filled logging road to Wapta Falls Recreational Site just outside the national park boundaries. Instead, find the signpost to turn off Highway 1 between Field and Golden. From the turn off, it's a short 2km drive down a gravel road to the trailhead. You will have to hike for 2.4km to get to the viewpoint. Allow 1.5-2 hours round trip.
Wapta Falls is the largest waterfall of the Kicking Horse River, at about 30 metres high and 150 metres wide. Its color is quite striking, and its flow is powerful. Unfortunately, we did not go all the way down to the base of the falls. There is a large mound in front of the falls that has a trail topping its ridge line. This provides a great view of the entire falls if you are willing to brave the steep sections and get soaked by the spray.
Stop #5: Reposados (Golden, BC)
Reposados Tacos is a fun and quirky Mexican joint with Rocky Mountain fusion serving up delicious tacos, burritos, Mexican food and cocktails. They claim to use only the freshest produce to create simple, healthy, & delicious fusions inspired by the flavours of Mexico. You know it’s good when it is popular with the locals and gets rave online reviews.
Due to COVID-19, it is currently operating as burrito shack with an outdoors patio section which we enjoyed. We each tried the 3 for $15 tacos - carne a la parilla (flank steak and a definite highlight), crispy pacific cod, aguacate crocante (lightly battered avocado) and cauliflower romesco (charred cauliflower). I found the flavors to be really inventive and fresh.
These tacos were as delicious as they looked and one of the best meals we have enjoyed in the Rockies. Food options are usually quite limited when you are on the road, so we were careful to research food options beforehand on Tripadvisor or Google. It always helps to ask the locals for recommendations as well.
