Victoria / Sooke: Day 1

BC Day long weekend is upon us, and it seemed fitting to enjoy a vacation in the capital and heart of BC, Victoria.  Famed for its British colonial past evident from Victorian architecture, Victoria is also popular for outdoor activities and being a City of Gardens.

Stop #1: Goldstream Provincial Park - Niagara Falls and Goldstream Trestle (Highlight)

This popular hike in Goldstream Provincial Park can be completed in less than 2 hours, and is rated moderate due to some elevation.

A short way into the hike will lead you to Niagara Falls, a 47m waterfall.

The hike continues by climbing a steep trail above the waterfall and continuing up to the railway tracks where the bridge crosses the canyon. Coming down was definitely challenging due to its steep portions.

The railway line is called the Esquimalt & Nanaimo Railway. As of 2015, rail service along the route has been suspended indefinitely due to sections of track requiring repair. There is discussion of the train service being continued, but nothing definite yet. The tracks and trestle bridge are private property and trespassing is technically not allowed. However, many visitors cross the bridge or walk out to the middle for coveted photos and bragging rights.

Stop #2: Ogden Pier Break Water (Highlight)

The Ogden Point Breakwater is a popular 1.6km 30 minutes walk near downtown Victoria that follows the cement structure from Dallas Road out towards on the Juan de Fuca Strait to a lighthouse on its furthest end. It is a beautiful open waterway where you can enjoy Victoria's bustling harbour traffic and wildlife.

Fisherman’s Wharf has cute and quaint boathouses and cafes, worth walking around.

Stop #4: Finest at Sea (Highlight)

I was recommended the fish here by a friend and neighbor. The food truck and charming seating area really knocked it out of the park with their delicious fish tacos. I recommend the deep fried halibut tacos, which was $13 for a very generous double portion, which rivals many fish tacos I have tried.

Stop #5: Parliament Building

Overlooking Victoria's majestic Inner Harbour, the Parliament Buildings are an architectural spectacle. The buildings are the official residence for the B.C. Parliament to pass laws and where the Provincial Legislative Assembly gather and discuss the direction of the province. Guided tours are provided.

Stop #7: Inner Harbour

This scenic waterfront is the location of Victoria's many tourist attractions, recreational activities, restaurants and shopping. We were able to take a quiet and peaceful stroll along here as it was not too crowded.
