Surrey, BC's 2nd largest city, is a 40 minutes drive from Vancouver. Nicknamed "The City of Parks", we just had to take advantage of the amazing fall foliage to explore several attractions.
Here is a short day trip plan for those interested to explore the city:
Shagun Sweets (affordable Indian restaurant)
Elgin Heritage Park
Historic Stewart Farm
Crescent Beach
STOP #1: Shagun Sweets
Channa Bhatura was absolutely wonderful and affordably priced at $5.50 for a full plate. This Punjab concoction of masala chana (spicy chickpeas) and fried bread called bhatura made from maida flour (soft wheat) is sure to tickle your tastebuds.
Their chai tea is also extremely warming and tastes better than similar chai-flavored beverages typically sold at more commercialized locations.
STOP #2: Elgin Heritage Trail (HIGHLIGHT!)
Elgin Heritage Park is located on the banks of the Nicomekl River and is home to a wetland, meadow, forested area and the Historic Stewart Farm.
The nature trail which we took through the park is over 3 kilometres, is beginner-level easy and takes around an hour to complete. Disappear into the crisp and golden fall foliage and observe the vibrant autumn colors as everything around you seems to burst with beauty. It is a super rejuvenating and tranquil walk with views of the marshland, and, best of all, not especially crowded.
STOP #3: Historic Stewart Farm (recommended for families with children)
Stewart Farm is home to an interesting and historic heritage house, a barn, several other buildings and a grassy area that wanders down to a river.
Historic Stewart Farm narrates the story of the Stewarts, an early Surrey pioneer family that lived on the site from 1880 to 1944. Costumed staff will greet you, offering information and a tour or the option to tour on your own. There are many well-preserved rooms and crafts and a dress up station upstairs. There is definitely some charm in treading softly on slightly creaking antique floor boards.
When we were there, there was a fun Halloween event as well, with little kiddos decked out in the cutest costumes running around and exploring the "haunted house".
Check out the authentic water pump in the backyard.
STOP #4: Crescent Beach (HIGHLIGHT!)
An amazingly picturesque and relaxing location, The best beach access points are found on Beecher Street, Sullivan Street and Target Street. Clamber down to the rocks to get closer to the Pacific Ocean and enjoy that amazing salty breeze. As well, real estate lining the beach makes for interesting conversation starters.
That's a wrap for a day trip to the wonderful city of Surrey!
